This Privacy Policy applies to the Marula mobile application and website for users located in the United States. It covers our closed community testing program and initial US launch. A separate, expanded Privacy Policy applies to users in the European Union. Questions: contact@maruladating.com.
1. Who We Are
Celony Inc. (“Marula,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a Delaware corporation operating a language-learning dating application that connects people across languages and cultures. Privacy contact: contact@maruladating.com.
2. What Information We Collect
2a. Information you provide directly: name and email address; date of birth to verify you are 18 or older; city and general location selected manually for matching; profile information including photos, age, gender, and sexual orientation; languages you speak and learn; relationship goals; and messages sent through the app. Marula does not access device location services or GPS. Some information may be sensitive; if you provide it, you consent to its use as described here.
2b. Information collected automatically: device type and operating system; app usage; IP address and approximate city-level location; crash reports; technical diagnostics; device and application identifiers; analytics; and security data. Illinois residents receive a separate consent notice if age verification involves biometric identifiers. We do not sell or profit from biometric data.
2c–2e. Third-party data, automated decision-making, profiling, and sensitive information: We process reports you submit about other users. Automated processing analyzes language goals, location, age, and relationship preferences to suggest matches. This is profiling; no match decision is final or legally binding, and you remain in control. You may opt out of profiling-based matching by deleting your account. Sensitive information may include sexual orientation, relationship preferences, dating goals, intimate interests, and city-level location. It is used only for matching, safety, moderation, and language learning—not advertising.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use information to create and manage accounts, match users, personalize experiences, provide real-time translation when you choose it, deliver lessons and phrasebooks, send service and security notices, improve the app using anonymized patterns, enforce our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and comply with law. We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
4. Data Storage and Security
Data is stored on secure AWS servers in Ireland (eu-west-1). We use HTTPS in transit, AES-256 at rest, bcrypt password hashing, role-based access controls, and regular security testing and monitoring.
5. Data Sharing
We share information only with service providers processing it for Marula: AWS for storage and infrastructure; OpenAI only when you choose to translate a specific message; Firebase for push notifications; Supabase for anonymized usage analytics; and OpenStreetMap for manual map tiles. We may disclose information when legally required or as part of a merger, acquisition, or asset sale.
6. Categories of Personal Information
Identifiers; demographic information; profile information; sensitive personal information; activity information; communications; and device and network information. We disclose personal information only to service providers and contractors acting on our behalf. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
7. Your Privacy Rights
US users may request access, correction, or deletion of personal information and opt out of marketing. California residents may also exercise rights to know, delete, correct, limit use of sensitive personal information, opt out of sale or sharing, and non-discrimination. Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Montana, and other states with comprehensive privacy laws may have similar rights, including opt-outs for targeted advertising, sale, and certain profiling. Email contact@maruladating.com. We respond within 45 days, may verify identity, and do not charge a fee. If denied, you may appeal by emailing “Privacy Request Appeal.”
8. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information
Marula does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. No opt-out is necessary. Global Privacy Control signals do not currently change our practices.
9. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as reasonably necessary to provide Marula, protect safety and security, fulfill this Policy, and comply with law. Account and profile information, messages, matches, and social activity are retained while your account is active. Optional identifiable analytics are deleted when your account is deleted and otherwise scheduled for deletion after 13 months. Age-verification status, push-notification tokens, support communications, safety and legal records, provider records, backups, and legal holds may be retained only as reasonably necessary.
9b. Account deletion: When you delete your account, Marula makes your profile unavailable and starts an irreversible deletion process. There is no 30-day recovery period. Information may remain temporarily in encrypted backups or provider systems until normal expiry. Deidentified or aggregate information may be retained.
10. Children’s Privacy
Marula is for users 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. Contact contact@maruladating.com if you believe a minor has created an account.
11. Push Notifications
You can control notifications through your device settings. Turning them off does not affect your account or app access.
12. Changes to This Policy
For material changes, we will email registered users at least 14 days before they take effect, display a prominent notice in the app, and update the effective date. You may delete your account if you do not agree.
